Smallmouth Bass fishing with Steel Shad Fishing Lure
How you fish for Smallmouth bass with a Steel Shad lure will depend a lot on the Lake that you are on whether it is Deep and Clear like Dale Hollow or shallower like Kentucky Lake.
When fishing a Deep Clear lake I prefer to position the boat on the edge of a drop and watch my electronics to show where the Smallmouth are hanging on that drop and vertical jig the bait straight over the side of the boat at the depth the fish are located.
Although another way to fish the deeper lakes is to troll the baits on a planer board/ down rigger system at a certain depth behind a slow moving boat .
Fishing Steel Shad Bass fishing lures for Smallmouth bass on shallow lakes is like most of us fish for any other species and that is to cast it out and crank it in sometimes using a fast retrieve and other times a very slow retrieve letting the bait actually hit the bottom and yo yo it back to the boat watching the line for subtle strikes, this retrieve mimics the crawfish which are one of the main forage foods of Smallmouth Bass. Counting the bait down (Casting and counting to a certain number before your retrieve back works well when fish have been found at certain depth)
When Smallmouth are busting the surface to make your Steel Shad Lure a Top water Bait go just behind the weight about one half inch and bend the lure 90 degrees this will make it come to the surface when retrieved and swim on its side ( to make it swim on the other side put the bend in the other side of the Steel Shad ) which is very effective on schooling Smallmouth.
Placing the bend in different places on the Steel Shad will make it Preform differently so don’t be afraid to experiment with it to make it work as you would like from Top to bottom .
